Trip Update #3 - South Africa Part 1

Finally some updates...

The last thing I wrote about was our struggle to get off of Zanzibar. Here I am...finally at the airport in Dar es Salaam. Yay! We are about to embark on a ridiculously long journey to Cape Town, South Africa. We are flying with Kenya Airways....which means we have to fly from Dar es Salaam to Nairobi to Johannesburg to Cape Town.

Luckily, I have won Rachel over to peanut butter. This has made our budget traveling much easier. Peanut butter and crackers anyone??

And here we are in Cape Town. Cape town is a very interesting place. It doesn't really feel like you are in Africa at all. It has a much more European feel.

We decided to spend the whole week in Cape Town. It was quite nice to be able to settle in to a hostel and just take day trips here or there. Rachel and I were also the only ones in our dorm room at the hostel...and settle in we did. I'm not sure how we managed to take up 8 beds with just the stuff in our backpack....but it happened.

The hostel we were at was a newer one, a little off the main tourist strip...but it was perfect. It had a patio with a view of table mountain, a self catering kitchen and was walking distance to most things. This is the view from the patio!

It also came complete with a colourful mix of people. There were two Australian guys who were traveling together also staying there. They were so funny. The one guy, was pretty much game for everything and was planning on doing everything from sky diving to shark tank diving to bungee jumping. His friend..... couldn't be more opposite. His friend had basically never left his town in Australia. I'm still not sure why he picked Africa as his first trip.....but he was scared of pretty much everything. He wouldn't even eat in a restaurant because he was worried about the food making him sick. He didn't even sleep in the hostel bed, I'm pretty sure he just fell asleep in the chair in the living room every night. He was a pretty good sport about us teasing him though.

Here is a nice view of Table mountain from a park not far from the hostel.

Our first day in Cape Town we just wandered around the city. It was fantastic. We just grabbed a coffee, went to the craft market and into the neat little shops. An afternoon visit to the patios for happy hour was also in order.

The next day, we decided to rent bikes and go down to the waterfront. It seemed like a good idea at the time...then we realized we had to get from the bike rental place down to the waterfront. I'm not SO experienced in city biking! Eventually we made it....with a few street crossing pushing our bikes. Well worth it once we got there.

We biked all along the harbor and around by the new stadium.

The next day, we did another shopping and patio day. It was nice to relax and enjoy the city. We had already booked a day tour for the next day, so we were really just making the rest of our travel arrangements for post Cape Town.

The next day... was jam packed. We had booked a Cape Point Bike Wine Tour. You are gonna have to excuse so many pictures! I couldn't help myself. First stop of the day, the shark lookout point. They have people stationed here in a little hut who just look out on the water all day to radio down if they see a shark. Apparently the last sighting was only a couple of days before. No shark spottings for me though...

Next stop... Boulder's Beach...famous for PENGUINS!! That's right, there are just tons of African penguins hanging out on the rocks. As you all may imagine, I took A LOT of photos. I will share only a few... they are just so cute! I think I could have stayed here for a very long time just watching them waddle around.

After Boulder's Beach we got on our bikes to bike out to Cape Point. It was unbelievably beautiful.

Nice spot to stop for a water break!

This might look a little small on the blog, but I thought I'd try and add it. Rachel has a panoramic function on her camera and took this picture.

Here we are on our bikes! That's me behind Rachel.

Here is the big tourist photo for the day...the most south westerly point on the African continent.

We stopped here for a picnic lunch. I can think of worse places to hang out.

On the way back, included in our day trip was a couple of stops at the wineries. This definitely doesn't feel like Africa!
